Since 2012, Sycamore has been delivering handmade gifts, homemade treats, and heartfelt love to women employed in Knoxville’s sex industry. Their mission is very simple: to let this community of women so often ostracized by and excluded from the church know that they are loved right where they are.

In Luke 19, we read about the little man, Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus was a notorious sinner whose disobedience to the Law and exploitation of his fellow Jews was no secret to those in his community. He was despised and rejected by his kinsmen, excluded from religious life due to his career as a tax collector. When Jesus came to town, Zacchaeus was interested, fascinated, maybe even convicted, but he was pushed aside due to his status as well as his stature. However, nothing would keep Jesus from Zacchaeus that day, because the Savior doesn’t look only to those who are clamoring to get to him; he is always on the lookout for those on the margins, too afraid to come in close. Jesus invited himself to Zacchaeus’ home, not afraid to enter “sinner’s” territory, offering nothing more than a shared meal and the friendship that comes along with it. The Bible does not record any sermon preached to Zacchaeus or scripture track left with him. No, Luke doesn’t tell us anything that Jesus said at all – it was only the love of the Christ that completed the work in Zacchaeus' heart. Without being asked or persuaded, Zacchaeus on his own renounced his wicked ways, made right his wrongs, and committed himself to a life of generosity.
We believe Jesus is calling us to follow this example. Our name – “Sycamore” – points us back to the story of Zacchaeus and the precedent Jesus set for ministry to our friends on the margins: go to where they are, love them without asking them to change, and let the Holy Spirit do the transforming work that only He can do. Through our consistent presence, simple gifts, and compassionate friendship, we strive to let every woman we meet know that she is loved – first by us, so that she can see how she is loved by her Heavenly Father. Your purchases this month will support our ministry of love, helping to purchase supplies to make our gifts, provide meals to share with our friends, and to occasionally meet the material needs of our friends in crises.
